Adults have the capacity to continue to develop throughout the life span, moving through the following stages of development:
1. Impulsive
2. Self Protective
3. Conformist
4. Self Conscious
5. Conscientious
6. Individualistic
7. Autonomous
8. Integrated
Most American adults reach the self conscious stage near the end of high school and remain there. A significant proportion of American adults are stuck in earlier stages of development that are not appropriate for meeting adult responsibilities. Most people are hampered by one or more self-defeating patterns that prevent them from continuing to develop. (See the Self Develpment page for more details.)
The seminar will focus on the conceptual, cognitive and behavioral sides of self development. In the seminar participants will learn about self development and work together to advance their self development. Although the seminar will examine the potential of neurofeedback training in promoting self development, the seminar will not be a context for neurofeedback training. The Center offers both guided Neurofeedback Training and an Internship program on Using Neurofeedback to Support Self Development as contexts in which one can experience extensive neurofeedback training.
The Self Development Seminar will begin with a free introductory session. The introductory session will cover the outline of the 10-session course, mutual expectations, and an introduction to the Self Development Framework, which will provide a conceptual framework for self development.
In the second session, participants will begin work on personal self development plans and fill out the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (WUSCT), which will be used to assess current levels of self development. (The assessment will be completely confidential.) The Seminar will meet ten times over the next three months. In addition to the weekly meetings, the course will include two private meetings to review the results of the WUSCT and discuss personal development plans.
The cost of the seminar will be $200.00, which will be payable in $25.00 payments at each of the 2nd through 9th meetings. The course cost includes the cost of the WUSCT assessment and private meetings. The cost of recommended books will be the responsibility of each participant.
